ESL, English Resource, English Language Learners (Sage MacCormack)
Green Valley Elementary serves students from a multitute of cultures and languages. Our Spanish speaking English Language Learners (ELL's) have the option to partake in a Bilingual Spanish Transitional Native Language Instruction (TNLI) program. This transition program offers Spanish language instruction beginning in Early Childhood Education (ECE). We have English Language Aquisition- Spanish (ELA-S) teachers from ECE-5th grade. The expectation of the program, however, is that students transition to English after three years in the program. For example, a Spanish speaking student who starts school in Kindergarten is expected to transition to mainstream English classes by 3rd grade. Additionally, all of our classroom teachers are trained to support English Language Acquistion (ELA).
Our other foreign language speakers (ELL's) have the option to receive daily small group English Language Development (ELD) suport. The multicultural students currently served by our English Resource teacher hail from Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, South Korea, the Phillipines, Tonga, Mali, Angola, Nigeria, Ghana, Togo, Eritrea, Etheopia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, the Ukraine, and more. During the small group instruction students are encouraged to share background experience including use of native language and other cultural knowledge. The small groups receive explicit instruction in English grammar, reading and writing with a focus on interaction and community building.
